He was the tribe of Sumian from the town of Bezodam. He was a fisherman and was at first called Simon but the Lord was pleased to call him Peter. He was the first of the disciples who clearly expressed faith in the Lord Jesus, saying, “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.” His love for the Lord was great and his faith in the Lord became gradually stronger. When the Lord was brought to trial, Peter denied him three times.
But after only one glass into the face of the Lord, Peter’s soul was filled with shame and repentance. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Peter showed himself to be a fearless and powerful preacher of the gospel. Following one of his sermons in Jerusalem, 3,000 souls were converted to the faith. He preached the gospel in Palestine, Asia Minor, Eliria and Italy.
Peter worked many powerful miracles. He healed the sick and resurrected the dead. And the sick were even healed from his shadow. He had a great struggle with Simon the magician who proclaimed himself to be a god but who was in reality a servant of Satan.
Peter finally shamed and defeated him. By order of Simon’s friend, the evil Emperor Nero, Peter was condemned to death. Having consecrated life’s worship of Rome and having counseled and comforted the flock of Christ, Peter proceeded joyfully to his death. Seeing the cross before him, he begged his executioners to crucify him upside down for he considered himself unworthy to die as he had his Lord.
Thus, this is a great servant of the great Lord, reposed and received the wrath of eternal glory. The holy apostle Paul. Paul was born in Tarsus and was of the tribe of Benjamin. At first, he was called soul.
He studied under Galilean and was a Pharisee and the persecutor of Christianity. He was miraculously converted to the Christian faith by the Lord himself who appeared to him on the road to Damascus. He was baptized by the apostles ananias by the apostle ananias named Paul and numbered in the service of the great apostles. With fear is healed, Paul pitched the gospel everywhere from the borders of Arabia to Spain among the Jews and among the Gentiles and received the title the apostle to the Gentiles.
As horrible as the sufferings were, so much greater was his superhuman patience. Throughout all the years of his preaching, Paul hung from day to day as on a weak threat between life and death. It’s just riveting to bring that whole tradition. And there’s nothing ancient about the presence of God. So we always say it’s ancient hymns, but somehow we enter into that timeless presence of God whenever these hymns are sung. And the great thing about today’s concert is we didn’t leave church behind.
We anticipated church ahead by having church now. So that’s present and future converge and meet and are focused in such a beautiful presentation. I was thinking there’s the fourth prayer of when the priest at Vesper says, “Never silent hymns of praise.” And then the angelic host, and host refers to, I think, an army, a heavenly angelic army, and wasn’t through a military cadence to the march of glory in this. I don’t know how many of you felt that martial spirit.
And the fact that we were fighting not with, well, with the two swords, the two edges of a sword, Peter and Paul, but it’s riveting. If we are to worship like that, the hymns of the church become part of our own self-understanding. And therefore, it says in the Psalms, “The wicked shall not stand in the judgment, but that’s all we’ll be doing is standing with that martial spirit of these hymns today.” So, I don’t even know if I should leave the stage. But I will.
